This is a series of essays dictated by the great writer and historian Tony Judt in his final weeks and months of life. As his ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease) progressed, he gradually lost control of his limbs, torso and ultimately even his vocal muscles. But his superlative intellectual powers remained, so that at night he would formulate each short account of his life and ready it for dictation the following day.I was fascinated by Judt’s account of his early life. Born in London into a lower-middle-class Ashkenazi family, he was the first not only to complete secondary school but also went on to get advanced degrees at Cambridge and the Ecole normale supérieure. He relates how he shed his youthful Marxist and Zionist ideologies and came to embrace a social democratic political framework, combined with a healthy skepticism of identity politics and political correctness. A man is reduced to a Samsa-like life, not by a miraculous metamorphosis, but by ALS. He is condemned to helplessness, immobility and hopelessness. He perceives his retained mental agility as a blessing, sometimes a mixed one. In the endless hours of being alone, he works his memory, later he dictates the recollections.
