If you like to hike in the Allegheny this is your book. I'm a climber and there is very little climb information, but it clearly spells out some really spectacular spots. There are very few illustrations or images. The map(s) are a little vague so I would recommend printing off another online to reference roads etc just to find the trail. It might be a little difficult for a lay person to understand some of the explanations, and on more than one occasion the landmarks were dated and therefore useless, but I have found some real gems with this book. I can not find a better book or better information from any source. If you hike there a lot, or you are even just planning a weekend vacation, this is worth the money to just choose the right trails. This book is an excellent book for descriptions of the individual trails. It lays out in pretty good detail the elevation change, the terrain, and other notable and helpful aspects of the individual trails. It's for that reason that I give this book at least 2 stars.HOWEVER, I'm also only giving it 2 stars because what should have been a one-stop-shop for planning a hiking trip to the Allegheny National Forest was really just another helpful tool like Google Maps, only it was one that I actually had to pay for. See, here's the problem: You get one one-page map at the beginning of the book with the entire forest marked with dots for the trails. You DO NOT get a map of the trails as a whole at any point. You only get maps of various scales for each individual trail. And speaking of scale, there is none on any of the maps. So this is how it boils down and this is why I'm irritated enough to write a review: My brothers and I are planning a couple day backpacking trip to the area. We simply could not use this book as a singular resource because we couldn't easily tell where all the trails intersected. We couldn't tell how long the stretches of the trails were. I was constantly flipping around through the book to piece the individual pictures in my mind and then using other map websites to help me see how the trail would work.For a day hike on a single trail, I suppose this book would work fine. For anything more than that a serious revision NEEDS to be made. Seriously, why would this book not have a 2-page trail system map of the forest?
